Mother Nature served us up a beautiful day on Belle Isle in Detroit yesterday for our filming of the closing segment of our film, “Those on the front lines of Cancer”. We were able to join the Detroit Kite Festival where we created a themed gathering, called “Cancer, go Fly a Kite”.
The host of our 2-hour PBS film, JoAnne Purtan, was on hand to film her closing to the film as well as fly a kite in honor of her mother and mother-in-law.
Also joining us for the 60-plus kite-flyers were several supporting organizations and some of their members. We are grateful to the New Day Foundation, Sky Foundation, Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit, Pink Fund, Kids Kicking Cancer, Kids Without Cancer, Wrapped In Love, Mission of Hope Cancer Fund, Wish Upon a Teen, Heart to Heart Hospice, the Rainbow Connection and the Artichoke Garlic Foundation for joining us for this memorable and touching event.
Before the kite flying took place they were able to decorate a kite in memory of someone who lost their battle to cancer or those who are currently on a cancer journey. In honor of our queen of soul Ms. Aretha Franklin, Brittany Naylor, a patient currently on the cancer journey decorated and flew her kite. A big thank you to Karmanos Cancer Center for their volunteers who helped with the kite decorating.
