While at the University of California Berkeley last week, we were invited to spend the day in the Raulet Lab where we sat with Dr. David Raulet, Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and a researcher in collaboration with Dr. Jim Allison in the discovery of the most successful cancer immunotherapies, called checkpoint therapies. We were taught why immunotherapy might be one of the current most effective therapies to rid someone of their cancer. He is an expert with natural killer cells, t-cell development, and tumor immunology. Dr. Raulet explained how these natural killer cells are inactive within tumors cells, but his current research tackles new ways to reverse the dormant natural killer cells to restore and maintain responses against tumor cells. Dr. Raulet shared his thoughts about lifestyle, certain diets, and environmental toxins, and how he sees these as potential aids in preventing certain cancers, he does see the biology of cancer and how a lot of people simply cannot avoid a disease regardless of lifestyle choices. For these reasons, Dr. Raulet’s research is one that has shown tremendous positive responses from patients who have taken the immunotherapy route. Due to his own person experiences with prostate cancer, Dr. Raulet expresses how personal his research has become due to his diagnosis. Immunotherapy is known among the many new developed cancer therapies; however, is proving to cure many people after treatment.
We are excited to have Dr. Raulet’s expertise in our upcoming documentary, Those On The Front Lines Of Cancer, premiering this Fall 2019.
