To say that Sam Kell, an 18 year senior from Stoney Creek High School in Rochester Hills, Michigan, is a courageous young man is an understatement.

In a world where our appearance affects us all, especially during our teenage years, Sam quite confidently wears a special cap 18 hours a day on his shaved head. The cap is connected to battery pack that creates tumor treating electric fields in his brain to prevent the cancer cells from dividing and his high-grade glioma from redeveloping. The treatment is called Optune.

Three years ago, Sam was experiencing double vision. An MRI discovered a cancerous tumor that had to be removed. Sam went through several rounds of the ground breaking proton radiation therapy. With the help of his oncologist, Dr. Carl Koschmann from Motts Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan  Sam and his parents, Michael and Gina Spehn, came across this new electrode therapy which today seems to be working. As Sam says, it has saved his life.

Last night we were able to capture Sam playing his favorite sport as a player on his Cougars High School basketball team. Sam takes the cap for the Optune treatment off for the game and as we witnessed the cancer has not stopped or slowed Sam down in any way. When Sam woke up from surgery some three years ago his first question to his father was “Was the tumor cancerous?" and his second question was "Can I still play basketball?" Sam embodies the philosophy that cancer will not define his life, this young man has a great deal to teach us all.

We are thrilled we are able to feature Sam and his parents in our film .
