Ten years ago, Shannon Watson was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her fight would be like so many – surgery, chemo, radiation, family support, nausea, and more doctor appointments. Her then-fiancé, Kevin, stood by her side as they planned a life together beyond this unexpected cancer journey. They thought they had it beat until it came rushing back into her life with vengeance. Shannon and Kevin decided to move back to Michigan to be closer to her family. Thismove would lead her to Gilda’s Club of Metro Detroit. Gilda’s, for anyone who is not aware, is the ground zero place to go for support and understanding for anyone facing cancer. For all of those who knew Shannon and her infectious personality and ‘we can do anything’ attitude, knew she had something strong up her sleeve – they were right and in no time, Shannon would create a group of ladies proudly known as the Rack Pack. These were young ladies who were facing a form of cancer, primarily breast cancer. This powerhouse group of ladies, under the leadership of Shannon, would start the Bras for a Cause event with a goal of raising $50,000 for their beloved club, created in honor of Gilda Radner. The Royal Oak Music Theatre event enabled ladies to strut their stuff in custom-created Art Deco style bras in celebration of their cancer journeys. The first event took place in 2008. The event now celebrating ten years this coming October 13th, once again at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, may have lost the founder, Shannon, who never had a chance to see how far they have come raising almost 1 million dollars to date; however, as we were told from several interviews we did today with those who knew Shannon not only as a dear friend but daughter as well as a wife, her presence is still very much alive and they know she is thrilled with how many lives the Bras For A Cause has impacted survivors and their families. We are thrilled we will be able to feature Gilda’s Club of Metro Detroit and all of the ladies from these years event in our film “Those on the Front Lines of Cancer”.
